Good morning. Good morning, well it's morning here in on the East Coast.
I'll let I see people, popping in so will take a couple minutes, maybe and let some people pop in here and get in, while we wait. Can I get some of you to let me know that you can hear and see me OK, you should be able to use the chat box OK good got some good hearing and seeing great.
Perfect perfect right well why don't I just?
Chat a little bit say Hello Before, I really dive into the nitty gritty of this web and R and what we let some people join in so.
My name is Melissa Mccamus and I am the assistant director of admissions here at the Jackson Institute at Yale and really glad you're here, I love.
Seeing where people are coming from. I know not everybody who registers is actually able to join in the end, but I always love checking and seeing where you all are from and there are I wrote him down there over a dozen US states represented from Maryland, Connecticut, Alabama, Missouri, Florida, California, California. If you're on it must be pretty early and then I counted probably over.
Almost 20 countries represented hopefully you're all are here is really quite cool. I see yes shut up to Curly SHHH, Brazil and got Iran, Indonesia, India, Rwanda, Nigeria, Sierra Leone. I could go on and on. I see some people from Asia. Hopefully you've seen that. Jackson is going to be doing some of the apps. E affairs in Asia this fall in November, so check out our events calendar for that.
So yeah, and I think some of you that I've met recently on the road. I think said. You were going to pop on with this weapon are so hello again, if I've seen you on the road back. I was in DC this week and so it's really exciting fun to be here and I don't know what time it is where we all are but, hopefully I've got my coffee here 8:00 AM here so.
Alright, we have a good batch already signed on so why don't I start of get started again my name is Melissa McGinnis and I'm the assistant director of graduate admissions here at the Jackson Institute for Global Affairs and I've been here at Yale and in Connecticut. Now, for I think just about 7 months. So I feel pretty new still but at the same time, like I've been out on the road and I've.
Been here and then through an admission cycle and it's been a really fun ride an super cool time and it's been neat just helping get Jackson more on the map that it was. I think a lot of you may know that we have been approved by the Yale's board that the board of trustees that we are to be the next professional school at Yale so.
Some people are surprised by that because it we sort of operate as a school already. But we are technically part of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and we became the Jackson Institute in its current form. It's I think it's about 10 years ago, now when John and Susan Jackson gave a very generous gift. So Yale could create an international public policy program so but we are also the continuation of 40, plus year.
Very robust IR program at Yale Yale's IR program was a founding member of Epsio, which the Association of professional schools of international affairs. Those are the that's the organization that sponsors lot of affairs will be in DC in New York City and September and then Asia this November. So check out their website. They have a lot of good resources. There's a great network of schools.
Happened somebody is having trouble hearing me. Feel free to. I know some of you can hear me and see me well. I'll try to speak up best I can also this webinar is being recorded, so you should get a link after the fact to the web and R soon. Hopefully you'll be able to check it out again. You know, maybe when you have a better connection. So hopefully you'll be able to check this out and there's.
Other archived webinars there as well. Some have been done by me some by others than they might all have a little bit of a different feel, and these are nice because I really like to focus on spending. Most of the time for you to ask questions because that's probably what you're here for I'll give a brief overview of the program and what I think in what we all think here is unique about Jackson and then just really leave it open for questions.
And it's at, I just mentioned the history of Jackson and the future. We will launch. Hopefully officially in 2022 as a professional schools after break. Brandon do all of that, so there won't be too much of an experiential change for the student cohort. Hopefully more resources and faculty and monetarily but otherwise I think you'll find that this alumni network that we've had in the experiences people have.
Had and continue to have world will just continue being the tight knit cohort that it is so.
Feel free to pop any questions in as we go. I will probably give an overview and then check in you know, we can spend time answering questions as a quick overview. I will say. I think when I talk about like Chuck about the uniqueness will talk about the size or location. We're going to talk about the core curriculum. The funding and the faculty and will touch on careers in alumni and then course we're looking for in admissions so.
That'll give you an idea of what where we're going to touch on so first time undersize. I mentioned it briefly. I think are a little bit. We are very, very small program our cohort of our two year MA is.
'Bout 30 thirty 35 each year, we have 34 enrolling students this fall. My first class very excited. You can actually see them already there. Bios are on our web page and I can happy to send you that link if you'd like to check those out. It's really helpful to look at those because so many perspective students ask that you know what do I need to have done or what do people do before applying the Jackson and it's really all over?
So do do look at those it's a great court would you have an MASA master or master of advanced studies in global affairs and that's our one year mid career program for mid career professionals who have a minimum of 7 years of work experience I can if you have questions about that. I can touch on that at its simplest there and no core requirements. It's one year boasted don't provide any funding for that program so we can talk about more about that, if any of you are interested in that.
So mostly I'll focus on me and a program the two year traditional program.
So I mentioned size, we are also located in this beautiful Victorian home on Hill House Ave, which was deemed one of the most beautiful streets in America and I concur to that. It's beautiful tree lined St were located in central campus here at Yale University. Obviously one of the Ivy League institutions and we have access to all of its resources so that's just a really exciting.
Thanks so even though it's a small program in a small cohort you also have access to thousands of Yale classes and then of course, the entire rail network. Let me see you wanna make sure there are some questions you. Let me answer these 'cause. It is about besides so people are asking about if we expect the cohort to grow. I I don't know that I've heard an exact number. I believe we do want it to grow a little bit. I think I've heard maybe the number 50.
Thrown around a little bit. I don't know, but don't quote me on that as I say that on a recorded webinar. But I think we've been about 25 to 30 and in the last couple years. They've done that 30 to 35. If we you know it's not gonna happen overnight. You know, we want to keep it intentionally small it's kind of what we're known for and there's astute lounge down the Hall and in future years, probably not in the near future.
But we know if we get a good number of our own. Jackson faculty might become a school. You know, we might need to move to bigger place. But I think the whole point is to keep this small intimate nature. The same thing would be MAS that program, the maker program has historically only had about 1:00 or 2 people per year. Part of that is, we don't provide the funding in a lot of those people are coming in externally funded often from the military or sponsored foreign governments.
And this year, we have for coming in, so we grew that a little bit too. We'll see how that goes whether or not. We want to keep growing that is also it's it's all on the table, but definitely no mean by no means do. We want to grow exponentially in the student body. So hopefully that answers that let's see here? I did want to touch a little bit more on the location. I mentioned were here at Yale were here at New Haven in New England and.
So far I've had a wonderful time. New Haven is a city. I expected, it to be. I'm not much of a city person so but it has been such a pleasant experience, 'cause. It's a very small city very manageable city. Totaly, a foodie town and art and culture scene, and so that's been that's been really unique and there's numerous residential neighborhoods and a lot of our graduate students actually end up choosing to live in the residential neighborhoods.
Off campus, so that's been a unique thing to learn and so a lot of people do end up doing that. We are right on the NE Corridor for those of you who don't sort of know where we are still some people like well on New Haven's at near anything and Boston is not far and New York City's just a couple hours away easy train ride and I've been popping into DC a lot, so you can get down there. Philly DC right on the Amtrak piece of cake so it's really.
A nice location to have so it has that small feel. And yet we're sort of there in the greater the Greater Arena Global Affairs.
Let me check on any questions, see if they're related I might save them. If we're going to talk about other topics OK. Yes, I know y'all can't see these I'll post them as I as I answer them. So let's see OK. Let me touch a little bit. I wanna talk about the core curriculum. We are actually one of the most academically free programs out there in the policy world we only have 3 core classes.
We have a staff class and E con class in history class and then you have.
A required for internship and I believe somebody might have asked about language. We do have a language requirement.
The language requirement doesn't have to be met until graduation, so if you will probably be test. If you can do it. I think before you arrive or a pon arrival meals language program is so robust so the testing can be done pretty easily. Even if it's sort of a unique language. You know it's pretty easy to find someone to do that, for you and if you don't meet sort of intermediate language requirements.
Then you would have to take classes language classes here at Yale so keep that in mind, and you want to fill that in those classes will count and that's the cool thing is some people want to come here for some of the language opportunities because they are so vast only tricky part is they follow the undergraduate schedule and so there's language labs daily and they meet early morning late afternoon, so you have to finagle that with your with your graduate class schedule, but lots of people do it, they may already be fluent.
In a couple languages and just want to take a little bit more.

Do you anticipate the number of students in the cohort to grow since the Institute is growing as a whole?
Micheal Fernandez
08:14:25 AM
Are you looking to keep it so small?
Let's see I want it. Let me make sure I'm not missing any of your questions here say it looks like I answered the coat work questions.

08:14:35 AM
Can you talk a little bit about the level of language proficiency needed to graduate? Thank you.
Micheal Fernandez
08:14:41 AM
Any language will suffice?
We hold off on some of these because I will touch on some of these a little bit later. Here's a language. Yes, any language will Suffice. It will suffice so it's it's definitely very robust and it just needs to be. You know could be language. Offerings are completely interesting in fast and so I think people come in with all doesn't have to be your.
Italian Arabic, Chinese, it there are I think somebody one of our current students was doing. Armenian so there's really any. I don't believe there's any restrictions as far as far as I know I find that out. I'll let you all know let's see you can also don't forget to tell you that, even though we have just the 3 core classes. The rest of your classes can be taken anywhere at Yale at any other professional schools and that's a really unique.
Part of the program as well. So we have you can. Obviously we'd like you to take our Jackson classes and you can those are be. And I actually copied the link. The link to the courses I will. Post this in the chat because it is so robust that.

If you use this link the GLBL classes are all the Jackson classes or Jackson Crosslisted classes and you can also take like I mentioned any of the other classes at yell so it can be an overwhelming prospects. So there's a couple of things one. We work with you individually or our student affairs office works with those people. When they arrive and you have one on one appointment with the director of graduate studies and you can sort of frame your curriculum and.
You do that with them a lot of the other professional schools, like to have Jackson students in their classes because you all come from such a unique background and have just different perspective and so even if a class is Fuller oversubscribed if there's usually no trouble getting in a class if you can't get in at one semester likely you'll be able to get in at the following semester, so, but in that academic freedom is also one of the reasons why we really do look to have.
A tremendous amount of work experience when you're applying before you get admitted so averages about 3:00 to 5:00 years, so do keep that in mind because you know it's going out into the world where you're going to experience and learn what that policy passion. You have and sort of be able to frame it more specifically so when you come to grad school. You know what you want out of grad school and you know which courses you want to take.
If you wanted to African affairs and you want to take them out of the studies and or classes at the school of Management. So there's there's so much in front of you that you really need to have an idea of what you want to get out of a program like this so that that's one reason why we do. Look for sort of extended work experience and also being a professional program, having those professional voices in the classroom is really important is even the students in the faculty will say you probably learn more from each other.
Uh then anything else so we feel it's really important to build a cohort of people with all sorts of unique experiences and professional background, so that is something that we do look for.
You can pursue joint degrees at Jackson with the school of Management School of public health and the law school and a lot of people do that and you just need to make a justification for that. You do apply completely separately, so that's something to keep in mind that you have to follow each schools admissions processes and potentially the same different standardized test so keep that in mind and.
Just because you if you don't end up doing a joint degree that doesn't mean you can't take classes at those schools. You still can take classes at those schools, so keep that in mind like if a joint degree is what you really want to do. That's great, it needs to make sense. You need to connect the dots and how that works with what you've done prior and what you wanted to hear what your long term career goals are so to keep that in mind. Maybe just want to take a few classes at the law school, maybe human right floor.

Will the Peace Corps Coverdell Fellowships be enlarged with the change from institute to school?
Different kinds of things, so there are a lot of options for you so that that freedom. And that interdisciplinary nature is sort of the core of who Jackson is alright glasses out here soon with some of your questions are will talk a little bit about funding and faculty and careers and it fit. But I want to make sure you get to some of your questions OK. Let's see we have a peace core question.
So we do get a lot of people who are from the peace core. We have 7. I think coming in this fall. I'll be doing a peace core specific web and our next month. I think it is, and it's going to. I'm going to do that, after we meet with our covered out partner again. I'm still new some working out all the different little nuances. So I don't know how to answer the question about whether it's going to be enlarged or change right now, I.
I think we are. It's my understanding were pretty low key, as far as the peace core. Coverdale goes we love peace core applicants. 'cause they're doing usually things right up our alley and the commitment to the mission of Jackson. So we get number of applicants and they're great. They offer a great RP. CVS actually bring a great deal of experience to the classroom, so that's really great, so I'm learning more about the cover dental the cover Dell.
I think local E we only have one organization that aligns with the cover Dell requirement on their end, so it's an organization called iris. I believe it is IRIS. So I need to learn more about that. But otherwise you know? Our funding is robust no matter what. So, the as far as the cover Dell it's more about.
Merritt and how that all works so I think I think we have one or 2 named covered else. The sheer out of the 7:00 who are rolling so.
Hopefully you'll be free in August Connor and any of you other peace core. Volunteers and I hopefully will learn more about that between now and then so I can give you a little bit more details but rest assured, that the funding itself is pretty robust and peace for applicants are are really good fit for the program.

Hey Mellisa, thank so much for the webinar! Could expand a little more on the professional experience required prior to application?
Alright let's see so dream is asking about expanding on the professional experience required that is so very broad and again. I would say you could point to the bios excuse me that we offer.
Excuse me on line because they give you an example of what people have done but Global Affairs is so for right so people are coming from all different backgrounds and they might be coming from the foreign service and the peace core like I just mentioned they're coming from international governments there might be coming from the private sector doing.
Tech kind of things, they might be doing consulting there. There definitely a lot of military so people are coming from all over and I think I touched a little bit on the.
Some of the needs for having the heavier side of that 3:00 to 5:00 years of experience and if I haven't seen any questions or if there's some out there who are right from under Dan something to keep in mind is that it is rare to for us to admit someone from right from underground and typically the Times that we do that. They are part of a particular fellowship. Many of the US citizens here might be familiar with the Pickering Foreign Affairs Fellowship or the Rangel Fellowship.
And those are fast tracks in the foreign service, so again right up our alley and part of the Jackson Mission and with that in mind. Skews me those fellowships usually require the fellows to go to grad school immediately upon the completion of their fellowship, so that we understand that and we know that so those are often the people are coming right from undergrad doesn't mean it's not going to happen if you are right from undergrad.

Hi, I would like to ask, is online course able to strengthen the application for MA program? For example like taking online courses in qualitative research or statistics?
But you are you need to have such a unique leadership and experience profile and that could be used so something to keep in mind. I hope that answers question about work. Let's see we have a question about on line courses really. I think taking online courses to prepare yourself. It's it's pretty much up to you. We don't have hard and fast requirements, we do.
Recommend highly that admitted students take a refresher class before enrolling in usually economics. Micro I think just to help them be prepared for the core curriculum here and I believe coming from the directory. They give some recommendations. It's not exhaustive. I think there's an online course at MIT that some people take so it's certainly a recommendation not required course.
Anything that you do prior to applying wood is advantagous because it showing your commitments do a program like this and anything that keeps you getting more and more prepared for graduate school certainly can't hurt.

do i have to submit my application together with the GRE or the GRE could come a bit later? do the two have to be submitted simultaneously?
OK, so listen is asking about the test scores yes. So why don't I touch base on the admissions process a little bit we have a application deadline is January, 2nd but we also have a December 1st deadline for fee waivers. So you automatically get a fee waiver if you apply by December, 1st there's no advantage.
In admissions your admission for for applying my December, 1st so that's something to keep in mind. It really it helps us know get a handle on the applicant pool and helps us to get some processing done so. Everybody is wait till the last minute to apply and it also does give you time to get your test scores and recommendations in 'cause. Those are usually the two things that.
Linger a little bit we know we'd rather have them by the deadline. But if you apply by December, 1st that gives you much longer time to get those things in for those who applied by January 2nd. We really need to have your test scores and recommendations. No later than the end of that week have in front of me to know what day of the week. January 2nd is this year. But just keep that in mind with your recommenders and when you take your test scores.

Hi, I have another question. Since I'm from Indonesia, should I do grade conversion on my transcript before I apply for the MA program?
So you don't have to have your scores submitted at the date of the deadline. It would be ideal. If you did. There's some flexibility, but not too much 'cause. We do get started reading pretty much right away in January. So to keep that in mind. Somebody is asking about grade conversion on their transcript, not to worry. I think there is a space to do that in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences application and if I did make that.
There before because we are still part of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. For now, the application. Portal is through them and we have to follow all of their application roles. So when you apply you're going to apply for the graduate school and make sure you choose Jackson Institute for global affairs that your Azure Department at you're applying to and fill out the application accordingly. But we also we really look at the transcripts and the ball my boss and the committee you know the director ever.
We all have experience reviewing international transcripts and Wes has great scales and so we can look at that so a conversion to 4.0 can help and we sort of do that. You'll see in our stats that we have in our our web page that we do use the 4.0 scale is an average. It's obviously imperfect and but it helps to normalize and it's a common question people ask so that hopefully.
Standardized is it a little bit, but it's we don't have minimum GPA's or GR ES either so something that's something we keep in mind. We're going to look at the kinds of brains. You've gotten in your relevant coursework whether it's the quad classes or the IR. Classes were going to want to see your trajectory lot of people blow. It there first semesters away at college or Whatnot and we want to see an upwards trajectory and we want to see that you.

Hi Teacher, my education background is media studies with 10 years work experiences in academia. Now I want to rich knowledge in politics and global affairs analysis. I am interested in the one-year programme, If is this programme is suitable for me or am I eligible to apply for it ?
You're serious about the kind of curriculum that you're taking so believe that answers your question Alright so teachers. A teacher with media studies so there's a particular question here. I don't know if you guys can see the chat that the moment that I moderate if you can. That's great if you can't hopefully I'm doing OK by reading them.
You know it's hard to to answer the question when people say this is what I've done. This is what I do? Is is the right fit for me? Is this program, the right fit for me.
It's hard not to just say yes because global affairs as I mentioned is such a broad topic, and can touch on so many areas and we're very, very IR heavy right. We have it's definitely an international focus here. We do have US citizens who are working on IR related things global policy.
National security foreign service all of the above so there are people who you know if you can if you have an interest in.
I say this all the time it sounds a little cheesy, but I've actually heard Jackson alone say this that. It's really about commitment to the global good and what that looks like for different people is different probably for everybody, so as long as you have that commitment to the global good global affairs. You can make a good case for why you need to graduate program and specifically hours but we do want your personal statement to let us know what?
What you like to achieve while you're at Jackson and what your long term career goals are just make sure you connect all those dots. You know one example would be. You know if you've spent all your classes doing domestic work and then you go work in the IR field. You know what does that look like that's a very over simplified an over generalized example but?
You know you want your whether it be if you've done study abroad during undergrad or your first couple of jobs any internships. You've done. They all sort of need to make sense with what your career goals is that's you know trying to philosophical of an answer, but it is because it's so broad and because your opportunities.
He ran in many IR policy programs are are just so robust.
You know, I like to tell people it's you pick your passion and we can really help you with that passion. I know that Yale Jackson can help with that just because of our tremendous access in interdisciplinary nature. If you want to pursue a particular area. I think somebody mentioned media studies and we have that here there's there's so much and again check out the Yale Course. List you can see what's available to you.
And it's in it's amazing, so you can actually craft your own particular area of study so believe that answers your question. Let's see questions are piling up and how we know we're good with time, let's see.

How good does the GRE scores (Quan, Verbal, Writing respectively) have to be in order to have a realistic chance to be considered for admissions?
Um somebody asked about the jury again and that we again. We don't have minimum scores are website does have the median. I should've put it in front of me. I don't have it in front of me. I think the median so sort of the middle ranges in the one 60s of the raw scores so again not a minimum something to consider is you know all the different application requirements are are important.
Right but we require them for a reason. So, your recommenders need to attest to what you're telling us in your personal statement. And you want to weigh your weaknesses and strengths so a good example is if you absolutely bomb the GRE.
Because when our minimums that's not going to automatically knock you out of the running. But that means your coursework in particular areas may weigh a lot more heavily so think about balance in your application among all the requirements. You know, we really do. We want that resume. We want to see what you've done? What your extracurriculars? Are we want again. Wanna know how that all fits in so it all, it all is important so don't worry too much mountain just the Jerry.
But do keep in mind, the balance.
In in the different strengthen your application.

Does the institute contemplate most its students to seek employment in the state department? What are the job statistics for Jackson's graduates immediately upon graduation?
Melissa McGinnis

https://jackson.yale.edu/beyond-jackson/jobs-after-jackson/employment/
OK let's see does instant converse with students seek appointment. State Department jobs just OK great. Or she die right. I do have a link for some examples of 1st jobs. Let me copy that and put it in the chat so you have easy access to that. The simple answer. Is is no they don't all have to seek employment state.
Department, a lot of people do, but I think I mentioned before people are going into maybe they're doing consulting occasionally people go on to do PH DS and teach but that's not really our focus here and that's not what we're all about, but I know a couple of the long done that people go into technology and of course. I mentioned military so I think you'll see a good example an on that link that I just.
Send it will show if you keep drilling down there's a good 5:00 or so years. Actually, more than that 1234567 about 7 years of examples in there and we feel we're going on to do fullbrights christophel. Brights are things people have done coming before applying you know, there's icy monetary. You know, some Hong Kong Monetary Authority and Kinsey and people that all sorts of NGOs.

08:35:41 AM
when determining length of work experience that an applicant has, are cumulative months of summer internships included?
So the quick answer to your question is no they don't want column in the State Department diplomats and foreign service and all sorts of people who go into those fields when turning length of work experience are human of months of summer internships. I think I touched on that a little bit. Yes, again because most of our applicants are admitted applicants have 3:00 to 5:00 years of work experience. Anybody who has the lower end of that or less. Those internships will weigh much more heavily.
But when we say we have 3 to 5 years of preferred work experience. It is definitely postgrad experience that were counting so do keep them in mind, but internships are important in building your experiences and who you are, and what you've done and again. If you have less postgrad experience, then those internships will weigh a lot more heavily so that was a good question.

Does Jackson admit many students ages 45 and older?
Let's see I think I answered the jirari question that it can come a little bit later. But if you apply by January only by like a week. Somebody's asking about age. I think our average age is.
In the the it's been between like 25 to 30. I think but there is no there's no ageism. So there is there's no reason not to something to think about where you are in your career programs.
Those are people who are really on the rise in their career there from all over the world. You should check the world. Fellows out on our website. I should talk about them. In light of the program as well because they're here. Every fall semester and not only are they here for their own enrichment and there, you know, taking classes but they're here to be mentors to our graduate and undergraduate students as well, who do The Jets and global first major and people end up.
Tieing for them, so being teaching assistants people.
You know they do teach courses, they they give lectures and seminars, so they're definitely a huge part of the Jackson family. In addition to the Senior Fellows, who definitely teach courses are also available for mentoring and I know, people who have gotten jobs. The Senior Fellows are really established there usually ambassadors. We've had former presidential candidates. We've had top generals, they are.
Just a really unique set of people to have here an there. Here, like going back to the small intimacy there in this hallway languar. The students have their lounge and where we all share coffee machines and it's that spend something that's been mind blowing to me, I spent 22 years at Princeton before coming here to Yale and and you're going to find people like the Senior Fellows in the World Fellows that.
Any of these institutions right you have top notch. People faculty everywhere. But in my experience so far, there definitely more integrated into the community here at Jackson. Vents my experience so far, so I think the alarm in the current students will agree to that and it tested that so there. You can just have random conversations with them or you can be of course, assistant with them.
And it's just it develops relationships and I know that we've had a lump have gotten jobs with a senior fellow after they've graduated so there are great, too.

Should all recommenders hold PhD or is it okay if my lecturers with master's degree give recommendation?
To have as part of our community, so that I hopefully that answers your age question, and also give me an example to talk. A little bit about something that I wanted to talk about that. I hadn't gotten to yet. Let's see somebody's asking if PH. DS need to hold it or if I recommenders need to hold a PhD absolutely not. You wanna choose. Recommenders, who know you well and know you the best and can again attest to who. You are, and what your commitment to global affairs is so it's not about credentials.
Title as much as did you work closely with them and did they know you well and we usually like to see at least 1 professional and one academic and then the 3rd sort of would be based on your different unique situation and where you feel. You need to build your strengths.
In that in who you want to choose a direct lenders.

Hi Melissa, since the Jackson Institute is now approved to be a school, how will that change things for students in the next couple of years?
Uh let's see I think I already answered the question about changes unless you were late to pop on. But yeah, another question about this school, becoming the Institute, becoming a school the right now our intention is the only changes will be having a more robust faculty and hopefully more robust financial aid. So let me before we run out of time. Let me actually touch on the financial aid a little bit because.
Having been in the public and international affairs arena for many, many years and knowing colleagues and.
You know our competitors if you will, I was, I had no idea that Jackson offered the funding that it did so Jackson does offer 100%?
Let me know not 1%, funny, they offer some form of funding to 100% of people who asked for it. So if you ask for it by checking the box on the application. I would like to be considered funding. You will be granted some form of funding. So our admissions decisions are need blind. So we make our decisions and then we deal with the financial aid in the financial aid is merit based so we have different tiers. So you could receive as little as half tuition course have tuition. It's well over $20,000 so that's
Nothing to sneeze at so it is between half tuition 2 full tuition 2 full tuition and full stipend so.
Somebody received something at you, a lot of people are externally funded and then that's a whole different scenario for them. But we have very robust funding here at Jackson and on top of that, if you're required summer internship isn't isn't paid, you can apply for up to $5000 funding for summer and we also have I mentioned being TAS or course assistance or Arres people do that, too, not just supplement their funding their paid positions.
But also to have that mentoring relationship and getting to know faculty and Senior Fellows and will fellas a little bit better.
And and then just the idea that in that student life programming.
You can ask for funding to start any sort of initiatives that will make your time here, even that more robust. We have salons and we have all sorts of.

For students interested in the Latin American region, are there many academic or extracurricular options for them?
I can't think of all of the names off the top my head at the moment but there is a lot of organizations that people try to start up and do and if you need funding to do that. You just supply through the student life office and chances are there's some funding available to you so I hope that that helps answer that question about changes and money. I let's see for students in traditional Latin America are there any academic rexxar collector curricular?
Options. Again, I think because you have access to all of the Hills. Horses an programs and professional schools. The answer is yes. So I posted the course list in the chat and you could search. I don't know off top my head what the different Department codes might be, but you could do a search on there and then you can really build a Latin American focus in your program absolutely with no problem.

Do you consider longer, full-time internships work experience at the same level as full-time employment? I graduated this summer and will be doing two 4-6 month internships in the next school year
Uhm OK I answered the internship questions so couple you have that how they they are very, very important, especially if you have less work experience.

Should all recommenders hold PhD or is it okay if my lecturers with master's degree give recommendation?
Let's see I think I answered about Recommenders and their backgrounds is it possible to have an academic record as part of my.

Is it possible to not have an academic recommender as a part of the MA application?
Is it possible to not have an academic recommender as part of my M application? Recommend that this is an academic program. University you will have access to the top we have the number one law school. We have the business school. We have all of these schools that are top ranked including Jackson, even though we're not a school yet we've been.
Up there competing with the likes of Woodrow Wilson in Kennedy and an all of the DC schools in New York City School, so you know it's a robust.
Program in a robust curriculum so we do want to see an academic reference. It will become much more important if your academic record is weaker so again that goes back to the balance and how you need to to build your application in such a way to to offset your weaknesses with your strengths. It may be helpful. If there's some reason you can't get an academic reference to use an additional information section and explain there's a reason why but it one is definitely.

Hi! I have been working for nine years, and I think it would be challenging to secure a recommendation from former professors may no longer remember me. Would another professional recommendation be submitted in lieu thereof?
Definitely recommended you not like automatically rules out if you don't have one but it's definitely recommended for all of the reasons that I just mentioned so I hope that helps, but do make the best decision for you. That's the best thing I can tell you someone's been working for 9 years, OK, so again. Yeah, people have been out. Specially, the people in the anti *** program. They have more concerns about that.
I'll just reiterate that it's it's definitely ideal to have an academic recommendation and does it have to be a professor not necessarily maybe it's somebody who knew you in an academic capacity like a Dean or maybe it's somebody who's just familiar with your academic work recommender that just says. Hey, yes, I remember them and they got a name. My class but it's not a good recommendation right so keep that in mind when you're when you're choosing somebody.
Again, I'll reiterate if you don't have an academic recommendation, either if you're on conomique record. Is is weak. Having somebody attesting to your academic skill will be that much more important. GR ES will help if you do really well. But if you do sort of mediocre G reason mediocre too.
Below average academically and your transcript. You know you're really going to need to build that up in some way and then we will definitely look at your leadership your career trajectory. That's super important. Obviously is a professional school, but it is a balanced because we are top Ivy League institution. So we do need to make sure people are academically prepared. I hopefully that makes sense.

is there on campus housing for graduate students?
Good somebody's asking about housing. Yes, there is some campus housing. I'm still learning my ways around there's there's various places. I think a lot of the other departments and schools use them. So we have a lot of PhD students to stay for awhile. It's my experience that a lot of the students here at Jackson end up choosing to live off campus and that thing about being in a place like New Haven is a city with surrounding residential areas and it's pretty easy to find.
Housing off campus and I think in a lot of ways that can be cheaper and you have more options to you available to you and something Easter Optism neighborhood just down the road that I know a lot of our Jackson students end up living and I think they like to choose the residential nature of a place like that. And so yes, there's Emily housing there's not enough housing for.
All the graduate students at Yale and so you know, sometimes it's a matter of finding it. But I think majority of the students. Jackson students anyway. Do tend to live off campus and it's pretty easy to find from my understanding and there's a lot of people bike around here cars, not required and there's plenty of places that are within walking distance. So you'll get a lot more resources. If you're an admitted student then though.
Still, pushing resources to you so hopefully that helps.

Can you discuss the "summer experience" a little more in depth, and the resources provided to students to match them up with opportunities?
Hell Let's see someone is asking me to discuss this summer experience on the resources provided great question is about us. So yes, it is required and most people choose to travel internationally and again. It should make sense in light of what you're doing here is part of the graduate program, which are long-term career goals are and that should allow me to touch on our crew services for services meets with you right away when you arrived, they need 1 on one with.
Each person to figure out what their goals are for not only their summer experience, but also for their what they want their career in their first shots, and there, definitely tap into the alumni network and I will say again that the Senior Fellows and the world. Fellows are also a great resource for that on top of the Yellow Alumni Network. Let me take a moment to say that a lot of people think well. You're such a new program so how robust is nail on my network.
Well, first of all the current iteration of Jacksons Alumni Network is passionate you might have seen our events page. The coffee chats. I am woefully behind on planning more of those I put out the request to our alumni base from the last just 5 years to see if they were interested in hosting coffee chats and within 24 hours. I had over 40 volunteers. So I've lost track of that in the paper I on on them.
Page because I really need to get on scheduling the ones that I've ignored they may be in the city near you so they're definitely all over the world. So definitely keep keep your eye on that in the next couple weeks. I'll have more of those scheduled but also I think I mentioned this before you have access to the entire Yale Network. So the alumni directory that you have access to is all our meals alumni, so between our one on one services between our.
Faculty are World Fellows each other your classmates and the yellow on my network, you have so many opportunities to find the right summer experience for you.
And also something to keep in mind is that every year every ******* fall. The career services office takes the cohort down too. I think there's a trip to New York City, a trip to DC and there might be a trip to London as well, where they do's career fairs in alumni networking in receptions. I think I'm going to join the one in October and DC because I want to learn and meet more alumni since I'm pretty new still so the network is there so you you.

any course subject requirement required before matriculation?
Can sort of work to find your best summer experience and again it can be paid by us if it's not paid so that's an exciting opportunity. Let's see if there are any course requirements before matriculation. So no not formally. I mentioned earlier that there is a strong recommendation, too if you haven't already taken some Nikon classes.
Prior to getting admitted that you should definitely take review classes over the summer before arriving it will definitely make your life easier. If you do that prior to arriving in matriculate ING at Jackson so otherwise. You know all of it. Anything you've done before we're looking at in line of admission and preparation. So there are no requirements, but having language helps having quite an experience helps having those IR classes helps.
Having your good internships an some good leadership extracurricular activities. We want to know what kind of volunteer work. You might done community service. All of that is super important in the big picture of who you are, and what we're looking for and and yeah, so that touches a little bit on what we're looking for from emission admissions process. So hopefully that touches on that a little bit alright, I think.
I think I have maxed out the current questions. We have about 7 minutes before we get cutoff. Have I covered anything. Let me cheat and look at some notes I mentioned the alumni network?

That's good, I think there was also let me send you the link to our soon bias. All the new ones are already up there so that is super exciting so let me put that in the chat so you have that.
Just to make it a little bit easier for you to get to to see the new Patch coming in which we're really excited about so yeah, so.
Feel free to ask any questions, these last few minutes.
I think I've covered on the all the main topics trying to think there's anything that I left out, we could probably talk philosophically for Binalong. While I will reiterate that you should keep your eye on our events calendar because hopefully in the next weeks will be posting more.
Coffee chats from alarm in various cities across the United States and around the world and I think that please. Find us on the road this fall again. We're going to be in. We're going to do an event in Cairo. So the American University of Cairo, who's to grad fair that NYU campus in Abu Dhabi hosts a grad fair and so me and those locations. Hopefully there near enough to where you are some of you are see.
I and I mentioned we're doing the absolute age of swing, which is Seoul, Tokyo and Hong Kong. So my first time so I'm really excited and my first time coming to Asia, so I hope to see some of you there. The application should open usually mid to late August so keep your eye on that we might do a blast to our email. Listserv once that's open so you know it's there, I'll reiterate there's no real advantage to getting it in.
Early we don't do rolling admissions, so it's more convenience for you. The form itself is pretty straightforward. It's really your your attachments that are most important your resume your personal statement your recommendations all of those things pulled together so again as a reminder December, 1st is the application deadline for fee waivers and January seconds are final. I think I saw a question Poppin Let's see.

If a coffee chat is not listed for our particular city, can we email you and see if there is a Jackson graduate in our city who would be willing to meet with us?
Coffee chats not listed in a particular city can, we see if there's rejection graduate in our area. We can probably do that being you. I don't know a lot of the alarm myself and where they are so it usually means that I need to reach out to our services here at Jackson. Find out who the alumni are I might have to email them 'cause. We're very protective of their contact information so.
We will it could be that if you want to provide us you can email either.
You can email me definitelymelissa.mcginnis@yale.edu but during the spring and fall. I'm traveling a lot of reviewing applications. You could get lost in the shuffle. So you can always email. the Jackson thought admissions at young lady do you address to ask about that?
And in the summer, we have a part time person working on our email account and with travels and vacations. Please forgive any delay in responding to emails, but you can certainly give that a try. I only have 3 minutes before will cutoff. I wish I had. I definitely know that there's going to be more DC. Ni we have one already scheduled in Texas we should have with two alignment Coble so well, hopefully have wanted.
Understand what's neat is one is based there and one is local so that's kind of fun and then in many other countries and I wish I could think of them all off top my head. I have a document here. But I don't wanna waste that I'm finding that so definitely keep your eye on that. Feel free to email spam any questions can't pull it ouf you know with apologies, but please do reach out, we're definitely growing there's so much interest.

Can't decide between Jackson and Kennedy, hopefully I make a right decision. Good luck to everyone
Danielle and Jackson, an especially what's happening with us growing into a professional school, so you know, I think that just will be growing. Hopefully staff soon and you won't have to wait, too much longer to get responses. If there's been any delay, but good luck to you as you make your decisions on where to apply.
You know there's a lot of great schools out there and we like to call him, champagne choices. So as you get admitted to these places just think about fit. I like to say that and.
You know every school has a tunic feel and it's unique personality. So I hope you find the right one for you. Hopefully, it'll be Jackson after 22 years in one place knew here I've been having a great time. So far, the alumni and the students have been great, so I guess. We're going to get cutoff momentarily so I want to say thank you for joining me. There's another one next month. It'll just be me again, but sometimes the questions are different so there's a different.
And also thank you so much for joining me and I hope to see you maybe on the road and I only hope to see your application. So we hope you apply an Holler. If you have any questions. Alright have a good day evening night wherever you might be thank you.
