    Essay Question 1

What motivates you to become a Global Health Scholar? In your answer, please describe both the knowledge, skills, experiences, and/or curiosities that you will bring to the program, and those you hope to gain. Remember that prior global health experience or coursework are not required for the Scholars program; rather, our intention is to understand what led you to this application - i.e., how and why you became interested in global health.

    Essay Question 2

In 2009, Jeffrey Koplan (Vice President of Global Health at Emory University) and colleagues wrote an article in The Lancet proposing this definition for global health (our emphasis):
“Global health is an area for study, research, and practice that places a priority on improving health and achieving equity in health for all people worldwide. Global health emphasises transnational health issues, determinants, and solutions; involves many disciplines within and beyond the health sciences and promotes interdisciplinary collaboration; and is a synthesis of population-based prevention with individual-level clinical care.” (Lancet. 2009 Jun 6;373(9679):1993-5.)
Using the above definition to frame your writing, describe a global health-related issue or challenge that is interesting to you, and explain how pursuing interdisciplinary study and collaboration in the Yale Global Health Scholars program would help you better understand and/or address this issue.
